Psychology Consultant

Work is a part of us. It's often why we are getting up, getting ready, and getting out the door. This doesn't mean that work is always easy. It can be stressful, or sometimes work can lose its meaning. This can lead to a range of psychosocial challenges that impact mental health and workplace wellbeing. This is why there are workplace psychosocial guidelines and legislation. But where do we start?

Start by making wellbeing seen and accessible. I offer:

  • Independent on-site counselling - a place to chat or vent where I incorporate ACT-based strategies.

  • Facilitate Team/Individual Reflection sessions - an open space to practice evidence-based reflection strategies.

  • A wide range of assessment tools to measure results. The evidence is there to see.

How organisations can operationalise their values

Culture isn’t a vibe: How do organisations bring values to life?

Go on any organisation website and usually on the ‘About us’ page, you will find some organisational values.

While websites can be difficult to gauge how organisations breathe and live their values, I am always disappointed when values and the examples of how they are integrated look vague. There’s usually Integrity and the example often given is, ‘We act on our values.’ What does that even mean? I can’t be only ones who think organisational values are and set and forget.

So how can a psychology help organisations retain staff and build a culture people want to come in to work for and clients want to return to?

How can staff and leaders identify with the company values and ensure they are working towards these? What are the mental health impacts when leaders and staff don’t work to values?

Working with marvelloh, we work together by combining science, best practice, storytelling, and connection. We work together to strengthen teams, improve work culture, identify meaningfulness at work, and have clients feeling valued.

It can seem overwhelming in bringing values across your systems to life. However, we can work together so your values become tangible and can even be measured. Some examples of how marvelloh can help includes diving into:

Investigation of the company values

  • How did they come to be?

  • What are the desired behaviours that match the values?

  • How do the individual values of leaders and staff stack up against the company values?

Prioritising leadership and employee psychosocial wellbeing

  • Working is hard. Challenges in working with clients or technology can arise. How are these challenges identified, responded to, managed, evaluated, and supported?

Reflective Practice

  • I wouldn’t have a psychology degree without learning and applying a lot of reflective practice skills, and they are skills. I don’t need to be an expert in your services to deliver effective Reflective Practice sessions for Individuals, Teams, and Leadership.

  • Teams reflective practice meetings are truly helpful experiences. It’s a safe and open time for Teams to discuss what’s going on with work.

Environmental assessments and adjustments

  • What does your physical and digital work space say about connection?

  • Do simple communication items, such as displayed signs and layout encourage values-driven work?

Brief psychological interventions at work

  • Strategies and techniques that are guided and grounded in evidence-based and best practice research.

  • Staff wellbeing is improved with brief intervention techniques when work days are challenging. Psychosocial safety plans are created with leader and team input.

  • Psychoeducation - finding out how people respond to their environments is one of the most underrated therapeutic and educational tools.

  • Psychoeducation is not just learning about mental health conditions (although it is an excellent tool here) but we can learn about team dynamics and psychological drives and responses.

Evaluate, evaluate, evaluate

  • A psychological scientist wouldn’t be much of a scientist if I couldn’t show results of interventions being implemented.

  • Collecting and analysing data can be done through mixed method approaches, combining surveys and finding common themes within interviews that can be structured, semi-structured, or narrative.

Get curious, get creative

  • So many questions to ask. Question everything, get curious and see creative teams and leaders can be.

  • Critical thinking skills are some of my favourite skills to learn about and teach. How do you know when you’re using critical thinking and how can that change perspective?

  • The importance of language and how language can bring change.

Understanding The WHS Regulatory Framework

  • How would you rate your knowledge of psychosocial risk management?

  • Which models (e.g., The Integrated Model) do you use to ensure effective and comprehensive psychosocial safety at work?

  • How aware are leaders and employees of WHS Regulations, Guidelines, and Codes of Practice?

  • Are leaders and staff up to date on legislative changes at National and State levels? How is this monitored?

Recognising and utilising workplace inclusive and trauma informed practices

  • Diversity is key to life but how does your organisation not only welcome diversity but deliver inclusive practices that honours difference, makes people feel comfortable, and want to return without having to divulge their life history and suffering?

  • Is your environment adaptable to a Social Model where multiple groups benefit from adaptations and accommodations?

  • Trauma informed practices are not just for psychology consultation rooms but can be applied across all industries to support psychosocial safety.

Culture isn’t a vibe, it’s more than pasting organisational values to a wall. It’s a system that is intentional and consists of behaviours, policies, processes, and a shared deep connection to meaningful and purposeful values.
