Hello, I'm Susan, the founder of marvelloh,
Former Airline Cabin Crew member, Bookshop Assistant, Construction Manager, and school educator. My resume reads like the novelty-seeking AuDHDer that I am. I found my hyper focus, which saw me gain a science degree in understanding human responses to their world (i.e., psychology).
I'm an AuDHD psychology professional, researcher, writer, and counsellor. The recipient of UniSQ’s Faculty Medal, I used my skills to address a significant gap in ADHD, Autistic, and AuDHD support: I am the researcher, writer and facilitator of marvelloh’s Autism and ADHD Psychoeducation Programs. I offer affirming counselling where conversations can integrate ACT, DBT, Narrative, & Self-Compassion therapies, and Psychoeducation, so clients can do what matters.
I work with organisations to deliver values-driven, inclusive policies and practices. I help organisations build trust and operationalise their values into measurable behaviours, making sure values aren’t just buzzwords stuck on a wall.
When I am not knee-deep in psychology research and pulling apart differential diagnoses, I can be found talking AFL, trying to finish a book, and not falling asleep during movies (I feel the love of coffee is evident in the pic).
What’s in a name?
Why did I completely make up a word to use as a company name that makes no sense to pretty much everyone?
Firstly, when I was creating marvelloh, I wasn’t sure what I had to give, psychology is very broad and I didn’t want to limit myself or cancel out skills. I wanted to do work that I enjoy, such as research as well as connecting with clients. A made-up name seemed to tick that box.
So, what is marvelloh?
The story goes back to my university days, which sounds long, long ago but really in the last few years. I had a group assignment where we were tasked with creating a mental health workshop for university students.
While researching ideas, I stumbled across an ‘awe walk’ and presented this idea to the group who were keen to research and write about something different. From here, my fascination with awe began, digging in deep to the works of Dacher Keltner.
When I wanted to work for myself, I wanted to include awe somewhere. The word is easy to play with in regards to autism but as I wrote before, I was afraid of boxing myself in and limiting opportunities. So, I looked to other words.
Marvel (verb): be filled with wonder or astonishment
Marvel (noun): a wonderful person or thing
Marvel: admiration, curiosity, awe, astonishment, sensation, wonder
I added at the end what a lot of people may say when they experience awe. Oh!
And there you have it,
marvelloh
The Use of AI
At marvelloh, we acknowledge the value of technology, such as AI. We love technology and exploring all that it can do. However, in the interest of providing accurate information in psychoeducation programs, research, consulting, and counselling, AI has not been used. Research, presentations, and writings (including emails) are conducted and evaluated using the psychology and human skill sets of trained professionals who value connection and don't simplify complex relational experiences. A human has written (and referenced) everything you read from marvelloh.
'AI is a business product, and one that has not earned the rights to my brain, writings, or personality. I want to show I'm genuine and engage in my creativity and building connections.' Susan Carey
What is Psychoeducation?
Psychoeducation is a professionally delivered and highly effective evidence-based therapeutic practice (Lukens & MaFarlane, 2004). Psychoeducation offers a holistic and competence-based approach, that emphasises health, collaboration, coping, and wisdom. The more knowledge a client has about their diagnoses, the more positive the outcomes.
Psychoeducation programs can sometimes be underrated but can be life-changing for professionals and clients. Psyhcoeducation reduces isolation and empowers clients undertaking the structured sessions. Psychoeducation has strong research backing as a psychological support in those with a range of diagnoses including ADHD, Autism, anxiety, depression, disordered eating, addictions, bipolar, schizophrenia, and many more.
For Autistic adults, recent research has found overwhelming strong and positive support for psychoeducation programs where Autistic adults wanted to know more about their Autistic diagnosis and an increase in acceptance post-psychoeducation, with participants feeling more likely to cope (Lenders and colleagues, 2024).
Psychoeducation is effective as it:
Is facilitated by professionals with relevant psychological qualification
Is structured with a set time frame, agendas and goals
Providing clients with up-to-date and accurate information and research
Minimises consumption of misinformation
Aims to educate, support acceptance, provide strategies and simple therapeutic supports
Complements other supports a client may be engaged in, e.g. psychology, counselling, OT, etc
